Plot Summary:In Sking, an isolated village in the Himalayan region of Zanskar, all women from old to young, strive hard to secure all that required within 3 months of the year to survive the whole winter. The hardship, human struggle, the weight of the family that they carry on their shoulders, sometimes literally and the beautiful moments in between the hard work are captured from the perspective of a house guest, an ethnologist from France.
The Himalayas as filmed by Marianne Chaud are a long way from the “Lonely Planet” images of picturesque monasteries and prayer-wheels we’ve grown accustomed to. La Terre des Femmes is a gentle, human and intelligent film that ranks among the most beautiful things I’ve seen on television for a very long time.
