名古屋郊外に暮らす4人家族に、夫の母・政子（吉行和子）が同居することになった。一家の主婦・巴（原田美枝子）は義母とうまくやっていこうと張り切るが、同居してまもなく政子が変調をきたす。ゴミ集積所の場所が分からなくなったり、巴の作った弁当を床にぶちまけたりする政子に周囲は戸惑い、苛立ち、やがて家族の雰囲気は険悪になる。思いあまった巴がいやがる政子を無理矢理病院に連れてゆくと、アルツハイマー型痴呆症と診断される……
